Gillian Anderson was born in Chicago, Illinois, to Homer Edward Anderson III, a film post-production company owner, and computer analyst Rosemary Alyce (Lane). When Gillian was a senior in high school, she joined a group of amateur actors. Her passion for the theater sent her to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, in 1987 for the National Theatre of Great Britain Summer Acting Programme. She spent several weeks learning from NT luminaries including Peter Chelsom, Bardy Thomas, and Michael Joyce. Anderson finished her schooling at the Goodman Theatre School at DePaul University in Chicago, Illinois, after that. Her breakthrough role as Dana Scully was in The X-Files (1993).
There, she met Clyde Klotz, the man she would wed on January 1st, 1994. The following month, Gillian became pregnant. On September 25, 1994, Piper Anderson-Klotz, her daughter, was born. Her acting career began in 1997 with the release of The Turning (1992), and the year after that, she played alongside Sean Connery, Ellen Burstyn, Angelina Jolie, and Dennis Quaid in Playing by Heart (1998).
