Within a year of the events of Batman Begins (2005), Harvey Dent, the new district attorney, and Batman successfully start rounding up the criminals who plague Gotham City. However, pandemonium is soon reignited when a sinister criminal mastermind known only as “The Joker” shows up in Gotham. In order to defeat The Joker, Batman is forced to “confront everything he believes” and advance his technology. His battle with The Joker also becomes intensely personal. Between Bruce Wayne, Dent, and Rachel Dawes, a love triangle forms.
A montage of Commissioner Gordon and other Gotham City Police Department personnel gathered for Harvey Dent’s memorial is shown. Whether or not he was slain is unknown. Following Gordon’s destruction of the Bat Signal above the MCU Building, Alfred burns Rachel’s note, and Lucius turns off the sonar device with a satisfied expression.
The Dark Knight
The police then start to pursue Batman as he flees from Gordon. Gordon tells his son that while Harvey Dent was the hero that Gotham needed, Batman is the hero that Gotham deserved. A manhunt is launched for Batman after the bat-signal is damaged. Gordon states as Batman climbs aboard his Batpod and leaves:
“He’s a silent Guardian. A watchful protector. A Dark Knight.”
