Ireland’s bank holidays: All public holidays in 2022 listed as country set to enjoy bonus day

The extra day means anyone planning holidays can bag nine consecutive days off work by using just three days of annual leave

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know Ireland will enjoy a bonus bank holiday this year.

March 18 has been declared a national day off, meaning the country will have a day to recover from the Paddy’s Day celebrations.

The extra day means anyone planning holidays can bag nine consecutive days off work by using just three days of annual leave from their employer (March 14, 15 and 16).

If that’s not enough, there are another eight bank holidays to plan annual leave around this year.

Here’s a full list of all the bank holidays in Ireland in 2022:

  1. Saturday, January 1 (New Year’s Day)

  2. Thursday, March 17 (St Patrick’s Day)

  3. Friday, March 18

  4. Monday, April 18 (Easter Monday)

  5. Monday, May 2 (May Bank Holiday)

  6. Monday, June 6 (June Bank Holiday)

  7. Monday, August 1 (August Bank Holiday)

  8. Monday, October 31 (Halloween/October Bank Holiday)

  9. Sunday, December 25 (Christmas Day)

  10. Monday, December 26 (St Stephen’s Day)

The March 18 bank holiday will mark a national commemoration and remembrance of people who lost their lives due to Covid-19.

From 2023, it is expected March 18 will no longer be a bank holiday.

But it’s not all bad news! A new public holiday is likely to be introduced around St Brigid’s Day, on February 1, from next year.

A campaign backed by the Women’s Parliamentary Caucus, the Green Party, Joe Duffy and Imelda May saw thousands of people sign an online petition for the new bank holiday to be held on the first day of spring.

Leo Varadkar also hinted that in future years arrangements could be made for St Brigid’s Day to be recognised as a day off.
