Assassin‘s Creed Dynasty, Volume 1, the English-translated paperback version of Ubisoft‘s first original Chinese comic, is now available. The original webcomic has reached 1 billion views in China. Assassin’s Creed Dynasty will be released as five volumes through 2022, in partnership with American manga and anime publisher TOKYOPOP.
Created by Xu Xianzhe, Assassin’s Creed Dynasty takes place in 8th-century China, following the journey of new character Li E, a shady Assassin trained by the Hidden Ones on the Silk Road. As the Tang dynasty starts to crumble, Li E must team up with Tang loyalists to save the dynasty and China from the greatest scheme the Middle Kingdom has ever faced.
Dynasty takes place in China during the 14th year of the Tianbao Era (755 AD). The comic follows the exploits of Li E, a man trained by Hidden Ones who are visiting from the West, as he sides with Tang empire loyalists against the oppressive force of An Lushan, a governor allied with the Order of Ancients.
Though we haven’t yet read Dynasty’s English translation, the comic has been well received in Chinese. The comic quickly rose into Tencent Animation & Comics’ Top 10 of Wuxia genre at launch and has remained there with a 9+/10 rating on all platforms.
The Assassin’s Creed franchise has visited China before, with Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China in 2015. The 2.5D stealth-driven platformer stars Shao Jun, an Assassin first introduced in Assassin’s Creed Embers. Assassin’s Creed Chronicles: China takes place well after Dynasty–the former is set in the 16th century while the latter is an 8th century story. In terms of the Assassin’s Creed timeline, Dynasty is closest to Valhalla, which occurs about 100 years later.
